Explain and mention the element of fiction and the kinds of fictions? And how they contribute to the story development?
Tell the setting of short story “The Dumb Man” by Sherwood Anderson? And how each characterization and irony plays their roles in fiction?
Write an essay analyzing the character’s psychological found in short story “Senility” by Sherwood Anderson?

1) Elements of fiction are:
 
Theme
Theme is the general idea in such story. Theme can be broadly defined as what the author is trying to tell the reader. Some fiction contains advanced themes like morality, or the value of life, whereas other stories have no theme, or a very shallow one.
 
Point of View (POV)
The point of view represents the consciousness the reader hears, sees, and feels the story. It also means the vantage point from which a narrative is told. There are many more kinds of points of view, including first person point of view, third person point of view, and omniscient point of view.

Styles
This means the author’s type of diction (choice of word), syntax and other linguistic features of a work. There are so many kinds of styles that the writer oftentimes used to write his/her own literary works, i.e. fiction, including metaphor, hyperbole, personification, irony, simile, sarcasm, paradox, climax and anti-climax, sinecdote, and many more which each of them has significant functions to create the complicated and rhetorical language, i.e. the figurative languages that have another or implied meaning. The styles of the language in such literary works are preceded in order to make the story interesting and more enjoyable to be read.
 
Characterization
Characterization means the participant in the story, and is usually a person, but may be any persona, identity, or entity whose existence originates from a fictional work or performance. The main characters in the story include:
Protagonist : the main character of the story.
Antagonist : the character who stands in opposition to the protagonist.
Minor character : the character that interacts with the protagonist. They help the story move along.
Foil character : a character who has traits in aversion to the main character.
Round character : the character that sometime become protagonist but sometime become antagonist.

Plot or storyline
It means the rendering and ordering of the events and actions of a story, starting with the introduction of the character or initiating events, then the rising action, conflict, climax, falling action and ending with the resolution.
 
Setting
Setting is a locale and time of a story, that is, how the story can be preceded in such places, times, and situations. The setting is often a real place, but may be a fictitious city or country within our own world. Sometimes setting is referred to as milieu, to include a context beyond the immediate surroundings of the story. It is basically where and when the story takes place.

Talking about literature, it will never die. It is just because of literature has certain element that will move the readers to be addicted to creative and meaningful things. The kinds of fiction : traditionally, fiction includes novels, short stories, novella, fables, legends, myths, fairy tales, epic and narrative poetry, plays (opera, and various kinds of theatrical dancing), but it also encompasses comic books, video games, radio programs, television programs (comedies and dramas).
    The contribute  of the elements in story development is to support the story become more perfect. Also to attract the attention of the readers or listener. Each of the elements is very important because if there is no the elements of fiction, the story will be flat and not clear. Beside that the reader not interest to read the story because they feel bored. As Mrs. Mila Arizah, M.Pd said “the story without the elements of fiction is like the body without bone”.

2) Setting of The Dumb Man
 
This short story has such a complicated storyline, so that is why this strange literary work of Anderson is perfectly set in an implied setting; it means that the reader cannot enhance their own thought. In other words, readers need critical thinking to solve this puzzle undone (i.e.to break the question relating to the setting of this short story). I myself, as the reader, personally have an opinion that this story sets in such a blue night where the situation existed has successfully made the reader confused to think about, whereas the situation is as well as the horrible and frightened situation. And it takes place in such a home in a street, where we can imagine that the place as horrible as the hell.
 
And, talking about the utility of styles that Anderson used in this short story, there might be many more ironies. One of ironies proceeding in this short story is pretty much like in the statement stating that “everything was as silent as the sea at night”. This irony include in the category situational irony. This irony has meaning that the fourth man is a silent man, not very talkative. Another irony comes in this statement “I have no words to tell what happened in my story. I cannot tell the story”, which means that the writer (Anderson) tried to give nowhere attraction from the reader to think about the meaning for more critically.
 
Meanwhile, for the role of characterization in the fiction is to make the reader or the listener know who the main character and also who that become antagonist (against the main character). So, the readers can be enjoy to read the story.
The role of irony in the fiction is to make the story more interesting and development of the reader’s mind because the reader should think what the word real means.


3) Simple essay about Psychological characters in Senility 

The Character’s Psychological in Senility
Senility is one of the literary works of Sherwood Anderson which has interesting storyline with many more writing styles used by the author. This short story has a unique scene that oftentimes will make the readers confused to think about the content of the story. There are many complicated elements that can be the one of the difficulties in thinking about the content of the story, including the characterization, styles, and the whole meaning of the story that can be found the difficulties for the readers. But in this case, we are going to focus only for the characterization.
 
There are at least two main characters in this short story, that are, The old man (Tom) and the foreign man. Another characters that is mentioned in this short story are the old wife, the nowadays wife, Tom’s father, and Tom’s brother. Indeed, in this case, if we talk about the psychological character can be found only in the main character, that is, the old man. The old man is the main character in the short story Senility by Sherwood Anderson. If we should define the word “Senility” itself in general, we can find it as well as the real meaning in the story. According to Wikipedia, Senility is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a long term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember that is great enough to affect a person’s daily functioning. The old man had that kind of disease.
 
The old man who named Tom was sitting in the railroad. Then, the strange man came to the old man and wanted to be cured by the old man. The strange man had a sickness that causes bleed. While taking cure the strange man, the old man reminded and started to tell his last time to the strange man. First, he told about his father who did not like the chosen girl for Tom. The old man then told about his rude brother who get sentence in a jail. The last but not least, the old man told about his twisted feet-new wife, where he bought her many pairs of dizzied shoes and unmatched gown.
 
Talking about our topic, the psychological character, can lead us to the general disease of many old people, which is senility. As we define before about the definition of it. The old man had been occurred a trouble in his recall or brains. Psychological of the old man is disturbed. The old man started to feel much more lacknesses of thinking and reminding every single thing, indeed he also forgot about his occupation. He began to do peculiar things because he become old. When the people become old they will feel afraid because their condition not same again with the condition when they are young, it also happens to the old man. He remember about his life story, he married with a woman that not against his father will. So, he feel guilty to his father. He also feel suppressed has a brother like Albert because his brother be killer and he didn’t regret do that. He has pretty new wife but her foot is not straight, it is twisted. The old man feel may be he is a luckless in the world because he becomes old.
 
In brief, this story can be concluded that the old man who hated being old, but in the end of his life he would be happy with his rest of life cause everything but happiness in this world could not be paid by money, we should let the “free” so it means that we should sincere in doing every single thing. And also, when we read the short story senility we can know that the old man has problem with his psychological because his become old. Every people will afraid when they become old, whether it’s afraid will have the disease, fear of losing people who are in love, and fear of the death.
